Disney World, the most magical place on earth, is a dream vacation destination for families, couples, girls’ trips, honeymoons, and solo travelers alike. We have had the opportunity to visit Disney World countless times in the last 20 years. Over the years, I’ve learned the ins and outs of Disney World and gathered essential tips to ensure your trip is smooth, magical, and unforgettable.
Here’s your ultimate guide to navigating Disney World! Oh…and a Disney Cruise is a fun option too….don’t forget you can leave out of Florida and hit up many major islands as a family all from the luxury of your cruise! Disney is always a fun adventure on land or sea.
Look for more information in an upcoming blog post about Orlando…what to do that doesn’t involve the Mouse! We own an Airbnb in Orlando and vacation frequently. So, I have many other ideas of things to keep busy outside the park!
1. When is the Best Time to Visit Disney World?
The magic of Disney World is year-round but knowing when to go can make all the difference in your experience. Here’s a quick rundown of what to expect in each season:
- Winter (January – February): This is the off-peak season, which means fewer crowds and shorter waiting times. The weather is cooler, and you can enjoy seasonal events like the EPCOT International Festival of the Arts.
- Spring (March – May): The weather is mild, and crowds are moderate, especially around spring break. Expect long lines during spring break times. Recommend paying for Lightning Lane passes and anything extra to ensure you get on the rides you want. This takes some coordination but will help with the experience. If you visit in the spring, don’t miss the EPCOT International Flower & Garden Festival.
- Summer (June – August): Summer is peak season, so expect large crowds and hot weather. Be prepared for long waiting times, and make sure you stay hydrated and use sunscreen.
- Fall (September – November): Fall brings lower crowds and cooler temperatures. It’s also the time for Halloween celebrations in the parks, including Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party at Magic Kingdom. This is a hit in the last few years so get reservations early.
- Holiday Season (December): The parks are beautifully decorated for the holidays, and there are plenty of seasonal events, but crowds can be heavy, especially around Christmas and New Year’s.
2. Where Should You Stay?
Disney World has a wide range of accommodation options to fit every budget and preference. As a travel agent, I always recommend staying on Disney property for the full immersive experience. Here’s a breakdown of the options:
- Deluxe Resorts: For a truly magical experience, stay in a deluxe resort like Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa or Disney’s Contemporary Resort. These offer prime locations, luxury amenities, and top notch service. They also provide the convenience of monorail access to Magic Kingdom.
- Moderate Resorts: For families who want to balance comfort and cost, moderate resorts like Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort or Disney’s Port Orleans Resort offer fantastic amenities and easy access to the parks.
- Value Resorts: If you’re on a tighter budget, Disney’s Value Resorts like Disney’s Pop Century Resort and Disney’s All-Star Resorts are great choices. You’ll still get the Disney magic with larger-than-life theming and great amenities.
- Off-Property Hotels: There are also plenty of great hotels outside Disney World, but they won’t offer the same level of convenience or immersive experience.
- Air BNB’s are an option too.
3. Must-Do Experiences in Each Park
We typically do a park hopper day pass now that our kids are older, and we have explored so much already. When they were younger, we would do a park a day, but now they have grown and have their favorites so we can bust out a day at Disney and hit all the favorites!
Disney World is made up of four incredible parks, each offering something unique. Here are some must-do experiences in each:
- Magic Kingdom: You can’t go to Disney World without visiting Magic Kingdom! Don’t miss classic attractions like Space Mountain, Pirates of the Caribbean, and the Haunted Mansion. Be sure to catch the daily parade and the evening fireworks show, Happily Ever After. If you like beer though, this is the only park that doesn’t serve, so plan accordingly.
- EPCOT: EPCOT is a park that celebrates innovation and culture. The World Showcase offers a unique opportunity to “travel the world” by exploring pavilions representing 11 different countries. Also, be sure to ride the new Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind coaster. We love ending our night here and eating through the world as a family. Our favorite is to start in Mexico and work our way around the world. We get an item in each country and share…it’s become tradition and so fun!
- Disney’s Hollywood Studios: If you’re a Star Wars fan, this park is a must! Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge offers the chance to fly the Millennium Falcon and experience the rise of the Empire in a fully immersive setting. Don’t forget to ride the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror.
- Disney’s Animal Kingdom: Animal Kingdom is perfect for nature lovers. Experience the incredible Pandora – The World of Avatar, ride Expedition Everest, and enjoy animal exhibits throughout the park. We typically start our day here and get on Avatar right away to mark that off the list. My kids love to get the corn on the cob and we do a few rides and head to the next park.
4. Disney Genie+ and Lightning Lane – Skip the Lines
One of the best ways to make the most of your Disney World trip is by utilizing Disney Genie+ and Lightning Lane access. This service allows you to skip regular standby lines for certain attractions. As your travel agent, I recommend pre purchasing Genie+ as it can save you hours of waiting time, especially in the busier seasons.
While some attractions (like the newer Star Wars rides) may not be included in Genie+, having access to Lightning Lane will let you maximize your time in the parks.
5. Dining Tips – Make Reservations Early
Disney World offers incredible dining options, from character meals to gourmet experiences. However, reservations fill up quickly, especially for popular spots like Cinderella’s Royal Table or Be Our Guest. Here are a few tips:
- Make Reservations Early: You can book dining reservations up to 60 days in advance, and I highly recommend doing so, especially for sit-down meals.
- Mobile Ordering: For quick-service meals, consider using the mobile ordering feature in the My Disney Experience app to save time.
- Character Dining: If your kids want to meet Mickey and his friends, book a character dining experience. It’s a great way to see the characters without waiting in long lines.
6. Packing Essentials
Packing for Disney World can be a bit of an art. Here are some must-have items for your trip:
- Comfortable shoes – You’ll be doing a lot of walking!
- Sunscreen and hats – Florida sun can be intense, so stay protected.
- Ponchos or umbrellas – Afternoon rain showers are common.
- Refillable water bottles – Staying hydrated is key!
- Portable chargers – You’ll be using your phone a lot for photos, the My Disney Experience app, and mobile ordering.
- Autograph book and pens – If you plan to collect autographs from characters!
- Pennies and Quarters- they have flat penny machines all over Disney. When the kids were young, we would pack lots of rolls and bring them with to stay busy through the day. You can buy the collection book at the gift shop or online before you go and work on filling up the collection as you travel from park to park.
7. Special Events & Seasonal Celebrations
No matter when you visit, there’s always something special happening at Disney World. If you can, try to time your trip to coincide with one of Disney’s major events, such as:
- EPCOT International Flower & Garden Festival (Spring)
- Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party (Fall)
- EPCOT International Festival of the Holidays (Winter)
- Run Disney Events (Various dates throughout the year)
These events offer unique experiences, parades, food, and merchandise that make your Disney vacation even more special.
